New and Improved in BitDefender 2010 More Protection Many of today's stealth viruses are designed to avoid antivirus detection by initially laying dormant only to attack your PC when it is most vulnerable. BitDefender 2010 features a cutting-edge security system, Active Virus Control, which constantly monitors all of the processes on your PC, 24/7, blocking any malicious behavior before it can cause any damage. More Speed The abundance of new viruses calls for faster ways to detect them. BitDefender's Optimized Scanning avoids the scanning of files that are known to be safe. The result? BitDefender 2010 scans your PC in half the time needed by previous versions, while using less resources. Easier to Use Whether you're a security expert or a novice, with the new BitDefenderUser Profiles you can easily manage your PC's security. The product interface adapts to the chosen profile and provides quick access to the main security functionalities you are most likely to need (Parental Controls for parents, or Gamer Mode for gamers). BitDefender 2010 also features three dashboard views--Novice, Intermediate, and Expert--to better accommodate users with different levels of PC knowledge. Improved Parental Control The Parental Control module features a newly added reporting system allowing parents to view what websites their children visit. Moreover, parents can set specific time intervals in which their children are allowed to access the Internet or use certain applications. Improved Intrusion Detection BitDefender detects and blocks attempts to change critical system files or registry entries on your PC and warns you about attacks performed by code injection (DLL injection). Improved In-Product Technical Support You can get answers to the most common product-related questions or contact technical support directly from the product using its easy-to-use self-service module.

Well rounded antivirus that doesn't eat up your memory!! October 15, 2009 N. Porter (Midwest) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Since I only had 2G of memory and I've had issues with both Zonealarm and Macafee using up a huge amount of my system resources... I was thrilled to see this offered to me. I had already been dissatisfied with my current version of Zonealarm. Well, this is a HUGE improvement. Easy to work with, the program has many features that are above and beyond what the other anti-viruses offer. Bitdefender offers lots of control by the user without being overwhelmed with information. So expert or basic knowledge of computers, this program is for you.
After having used this for a month, I highly recommend it. It doesn't eat up my system memory like the previously mentioned programs, yet still has real-time protection like antiphishing, antivirus, email scanning, etc... Even with all that running, it does a nice, clean job. I love the fact that the program is "smart" too. Once you do the initial scan, the program acts intelligently and recognizes files that it has already scanned and deemed safe. So the scans are easier as you go along. Of course, you have varying levels of system scans you can do, as well... and you can also turn off the "safe files" function. Highly recommend, well worth the price!!
Even my senior citizen dad could manage this! September 23, 2009 Reverie (Memphis, TN) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
After having tried Norton, McAfee, and the free AVG program, I decided to get this for my dad a while back. My dad watches a lot of movies and listens to a lot of music from various foreign websites. Unfortunately, he doesn't have a lot of computer know-how. Consequently, we were having to reformat his computer very often (so far 8 times this year, and the year isn't even over!). The malware slowed the computer and the incessant pop-ups were maddening - Norton, McAfee, and AVG helped minimally.
In the near 2 months my dad has had this program, his computer runs much faster and so far no problems. It probably seems to run faster since he's so used to it being slowed down by malware.
The software has expert, intermediate, and novice settings. My dad setup as a beginner, and all he needs to worry about is pressing buttons to perform a virus scan or check for updates. He setup the software all by himself. It's done pretty well eliminating threats during its scanning.
My dad and I are glad we found something that's user friendly and works on multiple levels: antivurus, antispyware, antispam, parental control, ID theft protection, etc. Oh yeah, the 2010 version is Windows 7 compatible too!
Performs well, easy to use. October 9, 2009 Jim 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I got Bitdefender Total Security 2010 shortly before a McAffee anti-virus subscription I was getting free with an old AOL account expired. Since getting BTS I've been using it on a Sony VAIO VGN-N395E laptop running Vista Home Premium (I purchased the Vaio from Amazon, so if interested you can look it up and see the specs; the only hardware change I made was bringing the RAM to the 2 GB max). Bitdefender claims that BTS "won't slow you down," and I was skeptical about that. Happily, not only did BTS NOT slow down my laptop, but after running all the tune-up processes that BTS includes, my laptop began to perform faster and more smoothly. E.g, software programs load and quit faster and run more smoothly. Start up time (i.e., after I type in my password) is also faster, though I have not noticed any change in the time it takes for the laptop to start from the time I push the "on" button to the time it takes for the password screen to appear.
Though BTS took a long time to install (about an hour), the installation process was smooth and intuitive. I selected the "Typical" user profile, the "Intermediate" view, and the "Laptop Mode." Since installing it, it has run smoothly and unobtrusively, and I find it extremely easy to manage.
The BEST! September 22, 2009 FlyingForLife (NC, USA) As always BitDefender is staying at the top of it's class!

Resource Usage
Minimal - I have 4GB of ram and hardly ever notice a slowdown!

Scanning & Healing
* Fast-scan function: Yes
* Scanning of Single objects: Yes
* Customizable scanning: Yes
* Boot sector scanning: Yes
* Memory scanning: Yes
* Registry scanning: Yes
* System Area scanning: Yes
All in all this worked great and will be the choice of software that I run on my machines in the future!
The total security includes new ways to manage your firewall and WiFi which is essential in this day and age... The best part has to be how the antivirus will remember if a file is clean or infected and it will NOT rescan file that are clean over and over which makes the scans faster than ever but more importantly less resource intensive and that is always a PLUS!
If you need to renew or are looking for a new Internet Suite I HIGHLY recommend the BitDefender line of products!
Update: I am a Bit Dissapointed September 24, 2009 Bob Feeser (Springfield, PA USA) This was my original review...
Bit Defender
-It includes a built in firewall whereas Vipre Anti-virus does not.
-Include a built in file vault which is a separate program you have to purchase from McAfee.
-You don't need a separate registry cleaner because it includes one.
-Bit Defender versions Internet Security and Total Security prevent unauthorized access to your Wi-Fi network.
-Includes 2GB of auto online backup.
-Managing home network included.
-3 PC's for 2 years instead of 1. McAfee even with a discount wants more for a 2 year span after renewal than Bit Defender wants for the 2 year license.
-Application time control: I was impressed with this feature. It provides parents with the ability to set specific time intervals of which their children are allowed to use certain applications. They can restrict by time, or just block access to that application altogether.
-Scans all web, email, and all instant messaging traffic in real time.
-Blocks spyware programs that track your online activities.
-File shredder permanently erases sensitive files, and traces of files
Overall once you get to use and setup this program, although it may take a little more time than you expected, it appears to have the most comprehensive set of features out of all of the different antivirus programs I have run through the years, and I have used quite a few. Additionally it does not intrude on your use of the computer during normal usage after it is set up.
I tried to run various tests pertaining to comparing boot up times on different machines in my network, both before installing and after, with competing products installed, and removed, and I found it to be inconclusive; there are just too many resident programs loading at boot up. Since you cannot control which ones are according to their own schedules loading, updating, etc. results were not consistent. According to the Bit Defender included brochure, they were near the top of the herd for overall performance, and boot up times. A few outside sources concurred on those findings.
This is a pretty comprehensive program and I want to use it for a while before I give it a total thumbs up, but from what I can see so far, I am pretty impressed. Because of the price for two years of protection, and comprehensive features, I gave it 5 stars. If anything that concerns me shows up, I will be back for an update on this review, but so far, so good.
This is my update...
I thought this program was excellent when I first installed it, but upon further use I have my doubts. I am getting repeatedly Bit Defender "Fatal Error Messages" insisting that the program needs to be restarted. This is not what I need to see continually on my machine that I do my emailing on. I went back to McAfee Internet Security 3User 2010. To add insult to injury, after removing Bit Defender, and loading McAfee, I ran a complete deep scan, something I did repeatedly with Bit Defender, and McAfee found a Trojan that was in a backup folder of an old machine that I had the data backed up into a folder. It was a Packard Bell Pentium 100 with a 2GB drive, which shows you hold old the folder was; McAfee found the Trojan, and quarantined it, and Bit Defender didn't know it existed. I know this isn't crucial, but it bothered me just the same; when I was removing Bit Defender with their built in uninstall feature, I was staring at the screen, and noticed the graphics on the Bit Defender uninstall screen had a real Mickey Mouse feel to it. The text was reminiscent of an old IBM XT with twin floppies for drives. Ok, I am coming down hard on Bit Defender. I am sure that with some massaging and some help from their tech support, I could probably get the recurring fatal error messages to go away, but I have never experienced an antivirus shut down, much less a repeated one. You know what I am talking about, they tell you it is a fatal error, and needs to be restarted. Well what protection do you have when it freezes and is waiting to be restarted. I leave that machine on overnight a lot. Ouch. Anyhow, Bit Defender has its strong points, as I mentioned in my initial review, but the honeymoon is over, and I am going back to my first love; McAfee.
