neck to neck competetor for Mac os x. Finally battle is even ! October 25, 2009 Rashmi A. Kumar (Cary, NC) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Microsoft has indeed done a fantastic job with Windows 7 OS. The OS is just fabulous as others have reviewed. I moved from XP to 64 bit windows 7. Got all drivers etc with ease and I am up and running 100% (BETTER THAN XP). Microsoft provided the free Anti Virus as well for win 7. This was really good. I had a problem with my clean install related to dynamic drive and had to call microsoft as the install said "look on log file for details. Could not create or find primary partition...". Ofcourse you can't look at any log file during install. I had a 300GB HDD and 1.5TB HDD. The 1.5TB was a dynamic drive (per OS). Due to that, win 7 wont install. Called MS and techsupport was very good and stayed with me till I completed my install (which I didnt need). They were curteous and really nice. I was amazed when I got a call the next day from MS again to see how I was doing and they asked me for my permission to close my case ... which is GREAT !
Microsoft really did wonderful. The UI is out of the world. I never expected it to be so slick. Have seen Dos, win 3.0, 3.1, 95, 98, XP and this is THE BEST!
Evertime I used to visit the apple stores, I used to drool at the snow leopard. Not anymore. The slick UI and the flexibility that Microsoft has provided is ... a treat to windows folks. Finally, we all can go home happy owning Windows PC and not look at Mac :) ! (no offence to Mac)
Vast improvement over Vista October 23, 2009 Xue F. Liu 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I have been using Windows 7 Professional for over a month now. (Received an early copy) I must admit the upgrade experience is a hassle but once you install Windows 7 you will be pleasantly surprised. I recommend a clean install for all users. Windows 7 has a noticeably snappier boot time than Windows Vista. What users will notice most are the changes to the interface. It took some time to get adjust new taskbar but once I became familiar with the new interface, I found it to be an improvement over previous Windows versions. Windows 7 also includes a comprehensive device drivers, I have only had an issue with an old printer where Windows 7 could not find the drivers. But with Virtual XP this was no problem, I simply installed the Virtual XP, and used my printer within the virtualized environment. I also noticed improved power management, including once of my favorite features which is the auto dimming of my laptop monitors once my computer is not being used.
Improvements/Pros/New Features
-New Taskbar interface, each program is represented by an icon for a clutter free taskbar
-Quicker boot times
-Comprehensive driver library
-Supports many devices out of the box
-Less annoying
-Virtual XP (for those who still need Windows XP)
-Networking
Recommendations
-Microsoft Security Essentials: A free antivirus program provided by Microsoft that fights viruses, spyware, rootkits, and Trojans. This program is a separate installation, and is also compatible with XP, Vista, and 7.
-Ninite: Free program that provides easy PC Setup, and helps to install Multiple Applications at once. Is a lifesaver for Windows 7 upgrades. Caveat, limited to popular programs such as pidgin, flash, firefox, skype, itunes
-FYI, if you are a student with a .edu email address, you can get Windows 7 Professional from Microsoft for $29.99. Just google "Ultimate Steal"
A home run by Microsoft -- Finally! November 2, 2009 Roger J. Buffington (Huntington Beach, CA United States) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Microsoft clearly understood that it was "betting the bank" on Windows 7. This is evident from the fact that installation of Windows 7 Professional is trouble-free, and the OS is attractive, easy to figure out, and easy to configure. It has quickly become a cliche' that Windows 7 is what Vista should have been, but it is also true. In my installation all of my hardware peripherals (3 printers, a fax, a scanner, and numerous external hard disk drives) installed instantly and easily. Only one of my printers required me to log onto Hewlett-Packard's website, and right there was a Windows 7 64 bit driver waiting for me. This is one day after Windows 7 was released to the public -- Microsoft clearly worked closely with hardware developers to ensure that everything was ready to go. Installation of all hardware went without a hiccup. In fact, most times when you plug a device into a USB port, Win 7 automatically finds the necessary drivers and simply installs the device.
One caveat -- XP users must do a "clean install" from XP to Win 7. This essentially means that if you skipped Vista (as many did) you will have to install Windows 7 and then reinstall your programs. I did this, and it was about a two hour exercise getting everything set up the way I wanted again after installing Windows 7 64 bit.
LOOK AND FEEL.
The "look and feel" of Windows 7 is better than either Vista or Windows XP. Unlike Vista, users of XP will have no difficulty finding the screens and menus they are looking for. The new taskbar in Windows 7 is very sharp. The user can "pin" any program to the taskbar for easy access. When a program is running, the user can hover the mouse cursor over the program icon, and a mini snapshot of the actual program appears, to show what is going on with the program. Right click on an icon on the taskbar and it will show you what files have been recently used or are open. The new so-called "aero" styling of Windows 7 is very pleasant to work with. One nice little feature is a little box at the right bottom screen--hover the mouse over it and the desktop appears without having to minimize all the open programs.
Performance wise, it is not clear that Windows 7 is wildly faster than Vista or XP. Most users will probably think it is simply because computers are in the midst of an upgrade cycle, with more and more users using more DRAM and faster processors. And, of course, the issue of 64 bit is emerging.
64 BIT
Windows 7 will likely lead the charge to 64 Bit software. Windows 7 gives the option of either 32 bit or 64 bit installation, and most users are expected to opt for 64 bit. They should. This will not immediately impact most users, but it opens the door for much better performance in the times to come. 64 bit software running on a 64 Bit OS can access far more memory than 32 bit, which was limited to 4 GB of DRAM. Those of us who manipulate large digital photographs, or use other processes that involve handling large amounts of data, will notice extreme performance improvements once true 64 bit programs are available. Now that a 64 bit OS is in place, and the accompanying hardware support (fast CPUs, cheap DRAM) is available, 64 bit computing will become common; very likely within a very short time. As always, once the capability exists, we will find new uses for them. Digital photographers such as myself have been looking forward to 64 bit applications for a long time.
In the meantime, I have found that every single one of my 32 bit programs runs just fine in Windows 7 64 bit. Supposedly some legacy programs have difficulties, but none of mine did.
CONCLUSION
After running Windows 7/64 for a couple of weeks, I have found essentially nothing negative about it. It is snappier than XP, which was starting to get long in the tooth, and seems to have eliminated some of the irritants of Vista. Most importantly, I am certain that almost all users will find that their hardware works fine on Windows 7, which was not the case with Vista. Overall, Windows 7 is clearly a major upgrade from Vista and XP and is what Vista was supposed to be.
Excellent for average user November 6, 2009 C.C. 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I got the OS as a birthday present from a friend who majors in computer science. Fortunately for students, Microsoft offers large discounts for students so he only needed to pay $30 or so.
As an average user I do little more than play games, surf the web and tweak hardware from time to time. Of course, Vista and XP is more than appropriate for such uses. My main reason for upgrading was so I could use over 4 Gb of RAM with the 64 bit version.
The most noticeable difference is the taskbar can now dock programs. They also offer the option of the traditional user interface for those who prefer the old look. Most Vista compatible programs seem to work with Win 7. Navigating around folders got a little easier (or more complicated depending on one's personality) with the "Libraries" directory that links major folders such as "My Documents", "Music" and "Pictures" to whatever window is being viewed.
Thus far it has worked perfectly, I've had no crashes and startup takes a little less time compared to Vista Home Premium. The User Account Control can be annoying, but I turn it off. I never liked it from the Vista days.
I would recommend it for average users who can get it for under $50, otherwise the upgrade isn't worth it for normal users.
Windows 7: 4x better than XP, 5x better than Vista, and either equivalent or better than Mac! October 26, 2009 Mino Guy 6 out of 9 found this review helpful
Just to show that I'm a reviewer to be trusted, I will give my computer information: I have a MacBook Pro 15-inch with a 320gb hard drive (on the actual computer it displays it as 290) and the top notch hardware features. I run a dual boot system with Windows 7 on it so I can run all my programs that are not compatible with Mac. It splits my hard drive into a 220 drive for my Mac OS X and 72 for my Windows 7. here's my experience of 7: love it, love it, love it!!! Let me start off with a pros and cons list:
Pros:
- as in the 7 commercial: "snappy and responconsive (spelled incorrectly purposely)"
- never a bit of lag or slowness. this thing is faster than my Mac OS X side!
- full driver support. not one problem with it yet.
- that macs crash less than Vista is true. that macs crash less than windows in general is a false statement. i'm not prepared to tell you how many of my friends' macbooks with leopard on them have crashed in the past year (im in high school and a trained intern in IT). my computer hasn't crashed once yet with 7
- everything looks cool, maybe cooler than mac! my friends saw me using this, apparently thought it was on Mac OS, they said without any knowledge that it was windows "that is the coolest looking screen i've ever seen!!." pretty good testimony, no?
- taskbar, which is half-inspired by the mac dock, is frickin sweet! brings the best of both the dock and the windows taskbar! seriously!
- amazing compatibility. the compatibility on this thing is redesigned. i use 10 windows xp exclusive programs on here, and they work like a charm, WITHOUT EVEN ACTIVATING COMPATIBILITY MODE! this is serious! Does anyone remember the game Knights of the Old Republic? does anyone recall that it doesn't work on Vista and won't work with XP since it is incompatible with half of the new graphics cards? well listen to this: i got it working on Windows 7! seriously! a program that was supposed to be compatible with XP, was not, but now works on 7! ha! and this was without compatibility mode turned on!
- windows 7 themes are outstandingly beautiful. sometimes i even activate show desktop just to look at it. when i do, i let out a sigh of pleasure like this: "aaaaaaahhhhhh"
- the clean install is the fastest i've ever seen on a computer. seriously! it is! it usually takes on average for any os about 45 mins to an hour. on 7 ultimate it took me 25 minutes! now that's great!
- more, but there are too many to name on such a short notice
cons:
- all but flawless. theres a few bumps here and there, but nothing that ruins my experience in the least bit. will be worked out in future updates, as they already have been
there's one thing I must say to all of those who say this is expensive: yes. it may be expensive. but have you ever recalled that Mac computers themselves are actually on average $300 more for the same hardware? so in all these two OS's on their respective computers are actually around the same price range. so ha!
I was going to write some more in my review, but that's really all I can say. not a single major issue, one or two minor issues that are fixable, that's windows 7 for you!
overall: Windows 7 is the best operating system windows has ever developed! and it's already equivalent to Mac OS X, if not better!
