5 out of 5 stars Works just fine, no problems   February 11, 2007

I have been a Mac user for 20 years, but I also have used Windows, and I have used both Mac and Windows versions of Quicken. Over time, I have stayed with the Mac version because, frankly, I like it better. It doesn't have all the extras of the Windows version, but I consider that a plus. It has a straightforward interface, downloads work fine and easier than the Windows version, and it's easier to work with accounts and transactions.

I had been using Quicken 2005 for the Mac. Based on other reviews, I hesitated to upgrade. I decided to wait until Release 2. The installation and conversion worked fine. Everything transferred over without a hitch (I have six-plus years of transactions in 40-50 accounts, including some now closed). Since the upgrade, everything is running just fine.

I upgraded primarily for two new features -- the ability to do estimated taxes using the current tax year's numbers, and the ability to back up automatically to my .mac account. I had been backing up by saving a copy and then manually copying it to my .mac folder. The new backup is fast and easy, much faster than the old manual version. Also, making a local backup seems much faster than before.

In short, everything is working just fine. If you install the software, then install Release 2, then open your data file, you should have the same experience as I did, unless perhaps there is some pre-existing corruption in your old data. My data file is 7.7 MB, and it's working flawlessly.

5 out of 5 stars Personal financial management software   February 21, 2009

It is really unfortunate that Quicken 2007 Mac gets such bad reviews from so many people. It was because of this that I had avoided buying it, but finally decided to give it a try, and I am really glad that I did. I really think that it is the best personal financial management software available.

I am saying this after taking a look at iBank which seemed to run more slowly as the database size increased according to a number of reviews. I didn't try running a large database on it myself, so I can't say from personal experience, but I wanted to avoid that problem, so I didn't take it further. I also took a look at Moneydance. A lot of people seem to like this software, but I found the interface to be less polished and it felt a bit like I was running some old modified DOS based software. Neither one allowed me to access my bank account data online and download it.

To put my comments here in context, I am a CPA and I generally find Intuit's marketing methods despicable and generally would prefer not to buy any product made by them. It is because of that that I am writing this review with some reluctance. However, I feel obliged to counter the bad and or misleading reviews that can be read here with the hope that someone can benefit from my experience with the product.

The first thing I did when I bought Quicken 2007 Mac was to see if I could connect with my bank in a rural part of the northeastern USA. I scanned the list of available banks and was amazed to find my bank listed!

Quicken provides readily accessible instructions on how to download transactions from your bank. I didn't know how far back I could go, so the first time I just tried creating an import file from 1/1/09 through today following the clear instructions in Quicken. That imported really easily, so I thought I would go back and see if I could import my bank account activity for all of 2008. Again I was able to without any problem other than a lot of the check numbers not showing who the payee was. But now I have all of my transactions back to 1/1/07 and my Quicken data reconciles to my bank balance to the penny. I am editing imported transactions to show payees and categories now, and it goes pretty quickly.

In one of the reviews below someone indicates that you cannot download and import transactions from your bank into Quicken 2007 Mac. I suppose it may not be possible with all banks, but do not have the time to determine that. In any case, I was able to with no problem from my little locally owned bank, so I question the accuracy of that statement.

If you read the reviews closely, a lot of them contain complaints about migrating data from a Window version of Quicken. I cannot address that issue as I did not try doing that. However, I think that it is important to put the rating these reviews give the product in context, so a low rating because of that issue may not be relevant to you.

Another reviewer indicated that there was a problem with Quicken 2007 Mac on Macs that have an Intel chip. I found this interesting as I am running the software on a Macbook that has an Intel chip running Mac OS X 10.5.6 and have found no problems. The only hitch I found was trying to add categories as entered transactions. I got an error message that a file was missing and I had to reinstall Quicken. I did that, and can now add categories on the fly. Some people have also complained about it being clunky. I found it to be a little bit too, until I went into preferences and made some changes like not asking me for a confirmation when I want to change a transaction.

Some people say running Quicken for Windows in a virtual machine is the way to go. I could have easily done that as I run quite a bit of Windows software in a virtual machine, but I wanted to be able to access Quicken straight from my dock. I also have Quicken Home and Business 2000 loaded in my virtual machine, but will be taking it off as I like Quickbooks 2007 Mac better, if for no other reason than the ability to directly download transactions online from my bank.

One thing to keep in mind though is that you can run into problems if you are going to try converting data files from an old version or a Windows version. Around 2004 or 2005, the format base of the data files were changed and that can cause some incompatibility.

As an example, in 2007 I wanted to convert a Quicken Mac file to QuickBooks for Windows. To do it I had to have Quicken Mac 2005, and first convert the data to that software before I could convert it to a Quicken for Windows file and then to a QuickBooks for Windows file. It ended up coming out fine, but there were a few hoops to jump through. Luckily I found someplace online where I could get Quicken Mac 2005.

So, depending on your situation, you may find that Quicken 2007 Mac will work great for you. I just wouldn't make a decision not to buy it based only on the low average rating given to it here. For me, I find the interface to be really enjoyable and am finding personal financial management to be fun again.

5 out of 5 stars Much better than Money, no bugs for personal user   October 13, 2007

I'm not sure why people gave this a bad review. I switched to Quicken after switching to a mac and learning that Microsoft doesn't make Money for Macs. To my pleasant surprise, Quicken is a million times better. I can do everything I did on Money, and then some, easier. I haven't run into any bugs yet, but it looks like those are affecting business users more. I mainly just use Quicken to track my checking, credit, and loan accounts, and it's worked great for me.

5 out of 5 stars Haven't Had Any Problems Whatsoever!??   June 8, 2007

I received this copy of Quicken 2007 for Mac preloaded on my Intel iMac. I love it. It works flawlessly (knock on wood). I've never had it crash or lock up on me once! It backs up to my .Mac account and prints reports, budgets, lists, accounts, anything. I like the way it autofills lines and automatically adds the decimal points. I've been using Quickbooks Pro 2007 for Mac for my business. I wish it was nearly as good as this Quicken. It stinks. I think it should get 2 stars only. I'm really suprised to see all the complaints and bad reviews. I think it is a highly polished piece of software. It makes me wonder if the preloaded software is somehow better? I don't know.
