I'm a tax attorney, and I spent many years preparing my returns by hand, including multiple different schedules. Two years ago, I threw in the towel and went to TurboTax. I've been delighted with the thoroughness with which it solicits necessary information and rolls it into an accurate return. My only complaint is that the AMT calculation function does not provide adequate explanation to understand and answer many of the data prompts.

I am a newcomer to computing. I found the software easy to use and clearly written. I haven't the foggiest notion why I was denied the rebate even thoughy I cut ther bar code off the packing box and sent it in with the other required material

I'd like to start by saying how comical it is that there are reviews of this product posted in mid-January, before any of the employer tax statements are even mailed out! Which leads me to believe that either (a) these reviewers are unemployed and therefore have no real need for tax software, or the more likely scenario (b) they haven't actually used the product but decided they'd go ahead and post a review anyway. Read into it what you will that the negative reviews are posted in mid-January...
I've used both TurboTax and Taxcut in previous tax years. Both seem to be excellent products. I started using TurboTax in the 2004 tax year simply because I thought it had a cleaner interface and the interview went a bit smoother. Of course this is entirely subjective, and in fairness I haven't used Taxcut since the 2003 tax year so it's probably that they've made improvements.
Anyway, TurboTax is once again a solid product. I use the Premier version as I have some investments as well as a rental property, and it is very helpful.
Bottom-line, when it comes to doing taxes you either have to trust yourself, an accountant, or a piece of software. I suppose all three can make mistakes, including a professional accountant (See the latest news on H&R Block and their $29 million tax error!). But this has been the best fit for me as I feel like I at least have some control. Whereas I don't trust my own tax knowledge enough to do it all myself, at the same time I have a tough time just handing all of my receipts over to an accountant (most of which use a software package, by the way) and blindly trusting that they won't miss anything either. TurboTax provides the perfect balance for my personal situation. I recommend the product.
